چکیده

The density of extended topological defects created during symmetry breaking phase transitions depends on the ratio between the correlation length in the symmetric phase near Tc and the winding length of the defects as determined by the momentaneous effective action after a typical relaxation time. Conservation of winding number in numerical simulations requires a suitable embedding of the field variables and the appropriate geometrical implementation of the winding density on the discrete lattice. We define a modified Kibble limit for the square lattice and obtain defect densities as functions of winding lengths in O(2) and O(3) models. The latter allows to observe formation of disoriented aligned domains within the easy plane. Their extent is severely limited by the momentaneous defect density during the course of

The Dynamics Of Vortex And Monopole Production By Quench Induced Phase Separation

Our understanding of the mechanism by which topological defects are formed in symmetry breaking phase transitions has recently changed. We examine the non-equilibrium dynamics of defect formation for weakly-coupled global O(N) theories possessing vortices (strings) and monopoles. It is seen that, as domains form and grow, defects are swept along on their boundaries at a density of about one def...

1 Defect zoo Many interesting developments in cosmology over the last 20 years have come from the realization, due to Kirzhnits [1], that (almost) each spontaneous symmetry breaking in particle physics corresponds to a phase transition in the early universe. For a typical grand-unified theory, the early moments after the big bang are characterized by the full grand unified symmetry. The exact n...

Formation of topological defects with explicit symmetry breaking.

We demonstrate a novel mechanism for the formation of topological defects in a first order phase transition for theories in the presence of small explicit symmetry breaking terms. We carry out numerical simulations of collisions of two bubbles in 2+1 dimensions for a field theory where U(1) global symmetry is spontaneously as well as explicitly broken. In the coalesced region of bubble walls, f...

Critical Dynamics of Symmetry Breaking: Quenches, Dissipation and Cosmology

Symmetry-breaking phase transitions may leave behind topological defects [1] with a density dependent on the quench rate [2]. We investigate the dynamics of such quenches for the one-dimensional, Landau-Ginzburg case and show that the density of kinks, n, scales differently with the quench timescale, τQ, depending on whether the dynamics in the vicinity of the critical point is overdamped (n ∝ ...

Topological Defects in SUSY

Topological defects are general consequences of almost all symmetry breaking processes. They arise naturally when a system goes through a phase transition from a symmetric phase to a phase in which the symmetry is broken. The formation and the evolution of cosmic topological defects in the early (or late) Universe has many direct and observable consequences that may allow us to constrain possib...
